Mary F. Meranto, 95, operated Falls grocery store with husband
March 19, 1912 -- April 20, 2007

Mary F. Meranto, a longtime Pine Avenue resident who ran a grocery store with her husband for many years, died Friday in Schoellkopf Health Care Center, where she lived since October 2000. She was 95.

Born Mary F. Critelli in Cold Springs, she married Nicholas J. Meranto on June 9, 1929. He died in 2001.

From 1938 until the mid-1960s, the couple owned and operated the Giant Food Market in the Niagara Falls City Market at Pine Avenue and 18th Street.

In 1999, Mrs. Meranto and her husband were honored as "Citidini Speciale" by the Pine Avenue Business Association at the organization's annual Italian Festival for their contribution to the Pine Avenue area.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and its Ladies of Charity and Bishops Committee. She was also a Red Cross volunteer escort at Mount St. Mary's Hospital.

Mrs. Meranto and her husband retired to Florida in 1977 but returned to Western New York in 1999 and Niagara Falls in 2000.

Survivors include three daughters, Marie Lombardo, Ann Faith Hoversten and Elaine; two sisters, Rose Catalano and Josephine Gallo; and a brother, William Critelli.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1413 Pine Ave. Prayers will be said at 9:15 in Spallino-Amigone Funeral Home, 1300 Pine Ave.
