Batavia police seek robber in store holdup

BATAVIA -- Police were looking for a man who robbed the Wilson Farms convenience store on Pearl Street near the city limits at about 10 p.m. Thursday.

Officers said the man, who carried a knife, took cash and cigarettes before fleeing on foot. Police said a surveillance camera recorded the holdup. Anyone with information should call (585) 345-6350.

Alzheimer's patient, 76, wanders off, is located

CHAUTAUQUA -- A 76-year-old Mayville man who has Alzheimer's disease went missing for more than an hour Friday before he was tracked down a half-mile from his home on Hewes Road, Chautauqua County sheriff's deputies said.

The man, who also suffered a stroke recently, walked into the woods about 3:10 p.m. and family members were unable to find him, authorities said.

Sheriff's officials, police from the Chautauqua Institution, State Police and Star Flight participated in the search. A family member found him about 4:30 p.m., authorities said.

Man charged in theft from relative's pension

OLEAN -- The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office has arrested a 56-year-old Olean man accused of stealing more than $9,000 from a disabled relative's pension, according to police reports.

Deputies charged Gary L. DeMann, of North Fourth Street, with grand larceny and endangering the welfare of an incompetent or disabled person.

Officials said that from February 2006 to last February DeMann stole money that was to be used for the victim's continuing care at a nursing facility.

DeMann was arraigned in Olean City Court and released on his own recognizance.
