Rev. Robert F. Mordino, director of youth retreat program March 15, 1937 -- April 14, 2007

A Mass of Christian Burial for the Rev. Robert Francis Mordino, a Buffalo-born priest who devoted his ministry to working with young people in Maryland, will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 180 George Urban Blvd., Cheektowaga, where he will lie in state today and Friday.

Father Mordino died Saturday in Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, Md., after a struggle with cancer. He was 70.

Father Mordino directed the youth retreat program for the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., for nearly 25 years. At the time of his death, he was director of Our Lady of Mattaponi Youth Retreat and Conference Center in Upper Marlboro, Md., a post he held since 1989. Previously, he was director of the Catholic Youth Organization Retreat Center in Rockville, Md.

Born in Buffalo, he attended Little Flower Seminary in Buffalo and Christ the King Seminary at St. Bonaventure University in Olean. Ordained in 1963, he said his first Mass as a priest in Queen of Martyrs Church.

Father Mordino was assigned first to a parish in southeast Washington, then as an assistant pastor in Silver Spring. He was a Boy Scout chaplain in Montgomery County, Md., and was on the CYO board of directors.

Surviving are two brothers, Anthony and Joseph M., and three sisters, Barbara, Marlene Faxlanger and Linda Wnuk.

A funeral Mass was offered for him Wednesday in Silver Spring.
