For 40 years, Jane K. Cempura was a friendly and helpful presence behind the counter of Cempura's Grocery and Meat Market in North Buffalo, before she and her husband, Walter, closed up shop and retired in the mid-1980s.
Mrs. Cempura died Monday -- a day after her 91st birthday -- in the Dammert Geriatric Center on the grounds of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill.
Born Jane Kopra in Buffalo, she was a graduate of the former Hutchinson Central High School.
She married Walter M. Cempura in 1936. The couple later went on to operate their family butcher shop on Sunset Street until 1985. That year, the Cempuras moved to Clarence and later settled in Williamsville. Walter Cempura died in 1996.
From the early 1940s until 2003, Mrs. Cempura was a faithful parishioner of St. Florian Catholic Church.
Mrs. Cempura moved to Illinois in 2005.
She is survived by a son, Walter R.; a daughter, Jane Cempura Voss; and two brothers, Vincent Kopra and Fred Kopra.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Florian Catholic Church, 587 Hertel Ave.
