>Man charged with saying box had bomb, poison

LEWISTON -- A Grand Island man was charged with felony false reporting Wednesday after he told the staff of Mount St. Mary's Hospital that he left a "bomb and poison" in a pink gift-wrapped box at their desk.

Scott Zientek, 26, entered the hospital's emergency waiting room just after 10 a.m. and asked hospital staff for some tape for the gift-wrapped box. Asked what was inside, he said, "just a few bombs and some poison," Lewiston police Sgt. Frank Previte said.

Previte said at first the staff assumed he was joking but became concerned when he wandered off, leaving the box at the desk unattended.
"A statement like that in this day and age causes some alarm," Previte said .
Lewiston police responded quickly, pre-empting a possible evacuation or lockdown, police said.
Zientek was arraigned in Porter Town Court and held in Niagara County Jail in lieu of $1,000 cash or $2,000 property.

>Man, 18, charged in sexual assault of girl

A Virginia Street man faces charges of first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child after he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl over a two-day period this week, Buffalo police said.

Freeman Wimberley, 18, is accused of attacking the girl in his Virginia Street home. Police said Wimberley also let her live in an apartment on Laurel Street after she was reported missing in January.

Meanwhile, while police were at the Laurel Street address investigating, Jeremy Thomas, 28, of that address, was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer, obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.

Police said they were there searching for the girl when Thomas punched a Buffalo police officer in the head and spit in the faces officers.
