The department of American studies at the University at Buffalo will hold a tribute for John C. Mohawk, Ph.D., the renowned Iroquois scholar, at 3:30 p.m. April 30 in the UB Center for the Arts. A reception will follow at 5 in the atrium.
Dr. Mohawk, a member of the Turtle Clan of the Seneca Nation of Indians, was in forefront in the Indian traditionalist movement, with essays and speeches in the early 1970s and as director of Akwesasne Notes, the national Indian newspaper, from 1976 to 1984.
At UB since 1993, he was a professor in the American studies department and director of its indigenous studies program. He died Dec. 10 at age 61.
