Teen killed in shooting on Sussex St. identified

A Buffalo police official Saturday identified the teenager who was fatally shot on the city's East Side late Friday and offered new details in the slaying.

Terrence B. Smith, 18, of Koscuiszko Avenue, was shot to death on Sussex Street near Deerfield Avenue shortly before 10 p.m. Friday, police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said.

Smith was part of a group that had gathered on Sussex, near Erie County Medical Center, for a party, DeGeorge said.

But the party apparently was canceled at the last minute, prompting an argument, he said. At some point during the argument, someone pulled out a gun and shot Smith.

Smith was declared dead at the scene. No weapon has been recovered, DeGeorge said.

"Police are canvassing the area looking for witnesses and have some people they will be taking down [to Police Headquarters] for further questioning," Dennis J. Richards, chief of detectives, said Friday night.
