Thomas J. Leary, dentist, former customs inspector March 19, 1950 -- April 11, 2007

A Mass of Christian Burial for Thomas J. Leary, a dentist on Seneca Street for 31 years, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today in St. Teresa's Catholic Church, 1974 Seneca St.

Dr. Leary died Wednesday in Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital. He was 57.

A graduate of Canisius High School, Canisius College and the University at Buffalo Dental School, he took over the practice of his late godfather, Dr. Thomas Fahey, in 1976. He worked his way through college, and during vacations he was a customs inspector at the Peace Bridge.

Dr. Leary's dental office, originally located at Seneca and Cazenovia streets, moved to 2436 Seneca at Burch Avenue in 1996.

"A reputation for prompt, compassionate treatment and reasonable fees accompanied the relocation," said his brother, Mark S. Leary of Snyder, one of Dr. Leary's eight siblings.

Dr. Leary was a member of the 8th District Dental Society.

Surviving are his wife of 19 years, the former Estelle M. Joyce; a daughter, Estelle S. Leary; five sisters, Ruth M. Barry, Margaret E. Haug, Anne E. Hunt, Mary E. Leary and Rita Escobar; and three brothers, Matthew S., Mark S. and Robert E.
