The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the fields for the 2007 and 2008 Old Spice Classic tournaments this week and they're terrific. Here's hoping Canisius or Niagara get involved some year.
The MAAC began the tournament last year and runs it at Disney's Wide World of Sports in Orlando. Marist was the MAAC rep and the Red Foxes beat Minnesota and Western Michigan while losing to Arkansas. Rider will play this season and Siena, which should be loaded with seniors, will be the '08 MAAC school.
The '07 field is Rider, Villanova, North Carolina State, George Mason, Kansas State, Penn State, South Carolina and Central Florida. In '08, Siena will battle Gonzaga, Maryland, Memphis, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and Wichita State. Wow.
Joe Mihalich and Tom Parrotta should consider this tournament if they're asked. All games are on either ESPN2 or ESPNU. They're against quality opponents. It's Florida over Thanksgiving weekend. Coaches loathe the thought of heading to one of these events and going 1-2 or even possibly 0-3 but opponents like that will help you become battle-tested come March and pump up that RPI.
