Teens net top catches in Naples Trout Derby

Teens turned in most of the top takers in the 46th Annual Naples Rotary Club Rainbow Trout Derby held last Sunday.

High, stained waters kept entries down to a total of 139 trout that day, but Bradley Vecellio, 15, of Cohocton struck early to take the largest fish by weight and the Grand Prize with a 21 5/8 -inch female that went 7 pounds, 6 ounces. His trophy trout hit at 8 a.m.

Zach Cappon, 13, of Williamson in Wayne County, brought in the first three-fish limit.

Candis Skowronski, 17, of Fairview Heights, Ill. won the Women's Division with a 24-inch, 5.5-pound rainbow. Candis, an award recipient four times in this derby, fishes with her dad, Joe Skowronski of Buffalo. He's fished this derby for 39 years.

Christopher Shadders of Rochester took the Men's Divison with a 24-inch, 5-pound, 13-ounce trout.

In the Youth Divisions (under age 16) Tom Folts of Naples topped the Boys Divison with a 23 3/8 -inch, 4.25-pound entry; Amber Perkins, 11, of Bloomfield got the Girls Division winner with a 22 1/8 -inch, 4.9-pound trout.

John Kowalczyk of Rochester brought in the longest trout (26 inches) for his 5-pound, 5-ounce rainbow that took the 65 and over Trophy.

A total of 757 anglers entered the Naples Derby this year, a record for yearly numbers registered since the Rotary Club began sponsoring this opening-day contest in 1996.
