A Cheektowaga man has been charged with beating his girlfriend's 4-year-old son so badly the child ended up in the intensive care unit at Women and Children's Hospital, police said Friday.
Jonas DelPrince, 33, who was convicted in 1997 on minor drug charges, was allegedly watching the little boy on the morning of March 27 when someone called 911 to report that the child was having an allergic reaction.
The boy, whose name is being withheld because of his age and the nature of the crime, was rushed to the hospital by ambulance, where doctors became suspicious of his injuries.
The boy had rib fractures, a lacerated spleen and was suffering from acute internal bleeding.
Cheektowaga police were alerted to the case and interviewed people who had been in contact with the boy.
While searching the boy's home, investigators found damage to the child's bedroom that led them to believe he may have been abused there.
The boy has since recovered from his injuries and is back at home now, police said.
DelPrince was arrested on Tuesday and charged with second-degree assault and assault on a person under the age of 11.
He was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail at the Erie County Holding Center on Friday.
