Investigators are trying to piece together events that led to the death of a woman who was fatally struck by a Metro Bus while crossing Church Street near the Main Place Mall about 1 p.m. Friday.
The victim, Suellen Sicchia, 50, of Niagara Street, was walking north on Main and was hit by the bus that was westbound on Church as she tried to cross the street, said C. Douglas Hartmayer, a spokesman for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. Sicchia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The No. 20 Elmwood bus had just pulled out of the bus loop, across from the NFTA station, onto North Division Street, Hartmayer said, and was traveling with at least one passenger on the bus, he said.
The accident occurred just as North Division becomes Church, at the intersection of Main.
"It's my understanding the operator was very distraught and was taken to an area hospital," Hartmayer said.
North Division and Church, between Washington and Pearl streets, were closed to westbound traffic for more than an hour as emergency crews worked at the scene. Rescue crews pulled the victim from beneath the bus.
The intersection is controlled by traffic signals.
NFTA investigators interviewed a few witnesses Friday, Hartmayer said. The bus also was impounded, he added.
"Hopefully, more details will be known with the investigation," Hartmayer said.
