Town backs City of Wellsville bid

Could this village become a city?

It could.

The Town Board on Monday endorsed the Village of Wellsville's request for a home-rule bill seeking to permit it to become the City of Wellsville.

Mayor Bradley Thompson said the Town Board members have "shown that they believe that the final say on city status should be left to the residents of the village."

Thompson has made seeking city status for the village both a campaign promise and a thrust of his administration.

The town's vote Monday will be coupled with the village's request for the State Legislature to grant the village residents a referendum on seeking the status. Thompson said becoming a city would be a financial boon to the village by, among other items, giving it a share of the county's sales tax revenue.

"We now have the necessary measures in place to take the next step in this process," he said. "This is a great day for . . . Wellsville, but I want to make something very clear: The struggle has only just begun."
