>Program promotes organ donation

Patients, donors and transplant officials gathered Monday at Erie County Medical Center to launch Donation Awareness Month.

More than 95,000 people nationwide are awaiting transplants, with more than 470 in Western New York.

Participants in Monday's event included Scott Swartout, who received a new kidney in 2000; donor parents Ron and Veronica Orlowski, whose son's organs were donated after he was in a car accident; and Darlene Aymerich, manager of family services at Upstate New York Transplant Services.

Aymerich and her family have a history of organ donation. In 1993, she gave a kidney to her brother. In 1996, her daughter, Shannon, was killed in a motor vehicle accident and became an organ, tissue and eye donor. And in 2005, her mother's eyes were donated after she died.
