The University at Buffalo women's basketball team gave Toledo all it could handle and then some, but it still wasn't enough to produce a winning effort Saturday afternoon.
Danielle Bishop scored seven of her game-high 22 points in overtime to help the host Rockets earn an 85-77 Mid-American Conference triumph before 1,008 fans in Savage Hall.
Bishop converted a traditional three-point play with 1:33 left in the extra session to break a 77-77 tie and enable Toledo (7-11, 3-3) to post its third straight win while dealing UB (6-12, 1-5) its fifth loss in six games.
Stephanie Bennett scored 19 points to lead the Bulls.
UB received double-digit scoring from four players and shot a sizzling 62.1 percent in the second half to overcome a 31-24 halftime deficit. But poor shooting in the first half (11 for 28 from the floor) and overtime (3 for 11) proved to be the Bulls' undoing.
Bennett's sixth three-pointer of the game gave UB its final lead, 77-74, with 3:20 left.
After Bishop gave the Rockets the lead for good, UB missed a shot on its next trip down the floor, but Heather Turner (Mount Mercy) grabbed the rebound to keep the possession alive. But after a UB timeout with 1:02 left, Ta'Yani Clark stole the inbounds pass for Toledo. Bishop followed with a jumper, and the Rockets went 4 for 4 from the line in the final 16 seconds.
The hosts missed 15 of their first 18 shots, but UB could build only a 15-9 lead in the first 10:25 because of its own shooting woes. Bennett's trey gave the Bulls a 24-20 lead with 3:58 left in the first half, but Toledo closed with an 11-0 run with Savannah Werner scoring seven of her 16 points during the run.
Toledo led, 38-28, 2:11 into the second half, but UB regained its composure with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes. Bennett hit a trey that pulled UB within 40-37, and Jamie Schiebner tied it with a three-pointer.
The Bulls trailed by six, 62-56, with 6:38 left but tied it 1:54 later after baskets by Barbora Homolova and Rachelle Matthys, and free throws from Belinda Gibb (11 points) and Bennett.
Turner (16 points on 8-for-8 shooting) hit a layup with 2:02 left in the second half to give UB a 70-68 lead. Diana Reindl (19 points) forced overtime with a layup of her own 20 seconds later. Each team missed its final two shots of regulation.
Freshman Kourtney Brown added 10 points for UB, which plays at Eastern Michigan on Wednesday and hosts Northern Illinois on Saturday.
