Joseph A. Gardella Jr., a professor of chemistry at the University at Buffalo, and Thomas Melendy, associate professor of microbiology and immunology at UB, are among 449 scientists recently elected as fellows of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science.
Gardella has been a UB faculty member since 1982. He is an analytical chemist in the College of Arts and Sciences. He was honored by the White House with a 2005 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. He also is a winner of the Schoelkopf Medal of the Western New York American Chemical Society.
Melendy, a faculty member since 1994, also is the winner of prestigious awards and grants.
Sakina N. Riddell, an attorney with Phillips Lytle, has been elected president of the Minority Bar Association of Western New York for 2007.

The Minority Bar Association works to protect civil rights, further the legal interests of minorities and enhance the legal services available to minority communities in Western New York. The organization also provides scholarships and mentoring programs for minority students and educational and professional support to minority attorneys and legal professionals.

Mark DiPirro, a police officer for the Town of Lancaster and a 1986 graduate of St. Mary's.
Peter Musialowski, a corrections officer at Gowanda Correctional Facility and a 1985 graduate.
Karen C. Penfold, director of the Richard C. and Karen E. Penfold Family Foundation and a 1965 graduate.
Marianne Scime, co-owner of CME Marine Sales in Buffalo and a parent of a junior at St. Mary's.

Alan Craik has been installed a president of the Snyder Fire Department for 2007.
