Dorothy Wahl of Bowmansville, co-founder of a family confection business, died Dec. 15 in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after many years of fighting leukemia. She was 79.
Born in Turtle Creek, Pa., the former Dorothy Knerr was a graduate of Kensington High School.
She and her husband, Milton C. "Bud" Wahl, operated a soda fountain and confectionery store called Wahl's Candies, at 2259 Genesee St. for many years before moving the business to 2351 Genesee St., where they manufactured and sold their chocolates.
Her husband retired in 1991 and she retired in 2003. A son, Michael, and his wife, Kathy, still operate the family business, now on Losson Road in Cheektowaga.
Mrs. Wahl and her husband were active in the Retail Confectioners International, an international confectioners organization, and attended many conventions and seminars in the United States and abroad. They also hosted gatherings for organization members east of the Mississippi River and Canada.
Mrs. Wahl was a member of Bowmansville United Methodist Church, and attended Caneadea Methodist Church during the summer months.
Besides her husband and son, survivors include another son, David.
A memorial service will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday in Bowmansville United Methodist Church, 5344 Genesee St.
