Walters taps policeman as deputy

Hamburg Supervisor Steven Walters has chosen a retired Hamburg police captain as deputy supervisor instead of reappointing Councilman D. Mark Cavalcoli, a Democrat.

Walters, the lone Republican on the Town Board, said he tapped Tom Best Sr. for the position because "I wanted to go in a new direction -- someone to bring fresh ideas to the table."

Best, a retired Hamburg captain and soon-to-be-retired Blasdell police officer-in-charge, will replace Cavalcoli, who served in the post during Walters' first year as supervisor.

Cavalcoli couldn't be reached Friday night to comment.

Walters had clashed with the rest of the Town Board during budget deliberations, but said his decision was not political. Best, he noted, is a registered Conservative, not a Republican.

He added that Best has an "intimate knowledge" of the town, and his background will make him instrumental in town government.

Deputy supervisors traditionally have been Town Board members.

"That has been the case, but it's certainly not required," Walters said.
