Irene V. Hernik, active churchwoman April 12, 1925 -- Dec. 24, 2006

Irene V. Hernik, a Cheektowaga homemaker and active churchwoman, died Sunday in Hawthorn Health Multicare Center, Buffalo. She was 81.

Born in Buffalo, the former Irene V. Kwapisz worked in manufacturing during World War II and in housekeeping throughout the years.

She was a founding member of the Buffalo chapter of St. Hyacinth's Benefactors Guild, a support organization for St. Hyacinth College and Seminary in Granby, Mass., affiliated with the Conventual Franciscans. Considered an outstanding seamstress, she made clothes for herself and family members.

A longtime parishioner of Mother of Divine Grace Catholic Church, Mrs. Hernik was a member of the church's Home Bureau.

Her husband of 42 years, Joseph, died in 1987.

Survivors include a daughter, Victoria Ruda; two sons, Martin J. and Raymond; two sisters, Jean Lewandowski and Wanda Reipold; and a brother, Father Gregory Kwapisz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Friday in Mother of Divine Grace Catholic Church, Cheektowaga.
