Big 4 three-pointer

*Aside from failing miserably against the nation's weakest schedule, Anthony Solomon's other big mistake at St. Bonaventure has been his baffling reliance on mostly marginal junior college players. Until James Williams bolted last week, the Bonnies had seven jucos on their roster this year, a number many schools would find astonishing. It's downright inexcusable for a university that was brought to its knees by the 2003 scandal surrounding juco welder Jamil Terrell.

*The Niagara and Canisius women have both won this year in the Carrier Dome but the beating Solomon's crew will take tonight will extend the frustration there for Big 4 men's teams. The local quartet is 0-19 against Syracuse in the Dome since it opened in 1980. The only win there was by Canisius over Columbia in the 1995 Carrier Classic consolation.

*UB's three-point home loss last week to 2-8 Delaware State -- without the injured Yassin Idbihi -- won't look as grievous as the season progresses. The athletic Hornets might be the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's NCAA Tournament team and were battle-tested by a schedule that had already included losses to Pittsburgh, Wisconsin, Marquette, Purdue, Missouri State, North Carolina State and Michigan.
