>Special meeting called to name new justice
The Tonawanda Town Board will appoint a new town justice at a special meeting this afternoon.
A vacancy was created when Gov. George E. Pataki appointed incumbent Frank Caruso to a one-year interim term serving the Eighth Judicial District of State Supreme Court.
Eight applicants were interviewed Wednesday by the Town Board, which met Thursday in executive session to discuss the candidates. The job paid $60,983 this year.
Caruso has been a town justice since 1995. His current term would have expired at the end of 2007. His resignation is effective at noon today.
The town justice job will be on the ballot next November.
Tonawanda Town Court has two justices -- the other is John J. Gruber -- each of whom handles traffic, criminal and trial sessions once a week, and small-claims court twice a month.
