>Jail time avoided in benefits theft

LOCKPORT -- A Sanborn man avoided jail time in Niagara County Court last week for illegally obtaining unemployment benefits.

Joseph M. Harris, 32, of Saunders Settlement Road, drew 10 weekends in the county work program and three years' probation from Judge Peter L. Broderick Sr.

Harris, who pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of petit larceny, collecting $7,775 worth of unemployment benefits between March 2003 and June 2005 while he was holding a job.
