Shooting victim is 73rd homicide

A man walking his dog stumbled onto a grisly scene Monday morning when he spotted the body of a man lying next to a dilapidated van in a vacant lot in the 100 block of Welker Street, police said.

The victim, 40-year-old Terrance Daughtry of Cheektowaga, appeared to have been shot at least once in the head, said Dennis J. Richards, chief of detectives.

Police were notified about 10:30 a.m.

Homicide investigators said the van, which was not in working condition, was parked in a vacant lot on Welker. Richards said some people may have used the van for illicit activities.

Investigators were looking into the possibility that the man had been robbed, but they had not ruled out other motives.

The death marks the city's 73rd homicide of the year. There were 59 homicides in all of 2005.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Homicide Squad at 851-4466 or the Buffalo Police confidential tip line at 847-2255.
