>Deputies testing device that scans license plates

LITTLE VALLEY -- An automatic license-plate recognition system is going on patrol with Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies.

The new viewing equipment was installed in one of the office's patrol cars recently at no cost to the county. The equipment and training were provided in an award by the state Department of Criminal Justice Services, Sheriff Dennis B. John said.

The new device consists of two infrared and color video cameras taking pictures of one plate every three seconds and analyzing images to determine whether the license plate is "wanted."

The technology will speed processing time and numbers of license-plate checks through a central database now accessible only through a mobile data terminal or radios in a process that lasts several minutes. An experienced officer working traffic with the device will be able to check out 150 plates or more over the course of a shift.
"With this new equipment, deputies will be able to identify more violators who may have otherwise gone unnoticed," John said.
