The Niagara men's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games Saturday with an 80-73 triumph over Central Michigan before 1,215 at Rose Arena.
Charron Fisher (23 points) took game scoring honors for the second time since returning from an eight-game suspension for the Purple Eagles, while senior Lorenzo Miles had his second consecutive solid game, pouring in a season-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting -- including 3 of 4 from behind the arc. He grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to finish with his second career double-double.
Michigan native Clif Brown added 18 points for NU. The senior forward and Miles combined for 15 points during a 19-3 second-half run that enabled Niagara (4-6) to put away the Chippewas (4-7). Fisher's dunk with 12:58 left gave NU the lead for good, 46-45.
Niagara shot 49 percent from the floor while limiting Central Michigan to 39 percent on 23-of-59 shooting.
Stanley Hodge came off the bench and dished out nine assists for the Purple Eagles.
The game featured eight ties and 18 lead changes. Niagara trailed at halftime, 32-31. While NU's lead grew to 12 points twice, the hosts pulled within 76-73 with 25 seconds left on a trey by freshman Jordan Bitzer. Bitzer finished with career highs of six three-pointers and 18 points for Central Michigan.
The Purple Eagles return to action at 8 p.m. Thursday against Delaware in the La Salle Explorer Classic in Philadelphia. That will be the first of three games in as many nights for NU. Niagara also plays Holy Cross (8 p.m. Friday) and La Salle (6 p.m. Saturday) in the event that serves as a homecoming for Purple Eagles head coach Joe Mihalich. He was an assistant at La Salle for 17 seasons before coming to Niagara in 1998.
