Services were held Friday for Barry R. Soffin, a longtime teacher in the Buffalo Public Schools.
Mr. Soffin died Wednesday in his Buffalo home. He was 59.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Soffin was a graduate of the University at Buffalo and Buffalo State College, where he earned a master's degree.
He worked 33 years in Buffalo Public Schools, teaching math at City Honors, East and South Park high schools. Mr. Soffin was co-founder of the Math League and of the SAT preparatory program.
A member of the Buffalo Teachers Federation, Mr. Soffin also was a delegate to the National Education Association.
He was the recipient of the Martin Luther King "Living the Dream" faculty award, served as a math tutor and was a member of the School Integration Resource Team.
Survivors include his wife, the former Rosemary Searcy; two daughters, Rachel and Deborah; two sons, Jonathan and Daniel; and a brother, Rabbi
