The Rev. Charles A. Steen died Sunday in his sister's Marilla home after a lengthy illness. He was 68.
At the time of his death, he was parochial vicar for St. Mary's in Pompton Lakes, N.J.
Born in Buffalo, Father Steen graduated from Bishop Timon High School, St. Joseph's Seraphic Seminary, St. Francis College and Holy Name College.
He entered the Order of Friars Minor, Holy Name Province, in 1957 at St. Raphael's, Lafayette, N.J., and professed his first vows in 1958 and his solemn vows in 1961 at Christ the King Seminary, East Aurora.
Father Steen was ordained in 1964 at Mount St. Sepulchre, Washington, D.C.
He began his ministry at St. Anthony Shrine in Boston as an associate. He continued pastoral ministry from 1965 to 1984 in Bolivia and was an associate for St. Francis Chapel in Providence, R.I., from 1984 to 1986. He continued his education at the Franciscan School of Theology at Berkeley, Calif., and served as a missionary in Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa.
Surviving are two brothers, Richard P. and James M., and four sisters, Sister Eileen, Carol A. Leonard, Marianne Runfola and Donna Gannon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in SS. Rita & Patrick Catholic Church, Fillmore Avenue at East Eagle Street.
