Legislators seek funds for UB coal center

A group of nine assemblymen and state senators from Erie County are backing the creation of a Clean Coal Center of Excellence at the University at Buffalo.

The legislators, who also supported the winning bid to build a new clean coal plant at NRG Energy's Huntley Station in the Town of Tonawanda, are seeking federal funds under a federal energy bill for the center of excellence.

UB has agreed to work with NRG on its efforts to build a coal gasification plant at the Huntley site. "It's a natural fit to have UB as a leading institution of learning immersed in the project's planning and development," said Harvey G. Stenger, the dean of UB's School of Engineering and Applied Science.
