>Hospital board, union ratify three-year pact
MEDINA -- A three-year contract between Medina Memorial Hospital and its service and maintenance employees has been ratified by the union and the hospital board.
The members of Service Employees International Union Local 1199 Upstate voted, 98-4, in favor of the deal, reached last week after the union threatened a job action. It was the first contract for the workers since joining the union.
Union chief negotiator James Scardato said the union likes the shift to daily overtime from weekly overtime and pay raises averaging 6 percent in the first year of the contract. He said certified nurse's aides won double-digit increases.
Hospital President and Chief Executive Officer James E. Sinner said he thinks any ill feeling from the bargaining has been smoothed over. "It went very smoothly. There's always chest-pounding, but it goes away," he said.
