>40th birthday coming for fast-growing GCC
BATAVIA -- Hailed in a national publication as one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the nation, Genesee Community College is preparing for its 40th anniversary celebration.
Using data supplied by the U.S. Department of Education, Community College Week reported that GCC was "the 17th fastest-growing community college in the United States" in 2004-05. In that period, GCC recorded a 6.3 percent enrollment gain, to 6,490 students.
This is the second time the Batavia-based college has been among the fastest-growing mid-size community colleges in the nation. GCC was eighth in the 2002-2003 period.
The college, which accepted a small number of students in 1967 in a former discount chain store, will hold a 40th anniversary convocation May 3, 2007. Risa Palm, provost of the State University of New York, will deliver the convocation address.
