>Shana the dog hero gaining wide acclaim
After receiving a hero's award for saving an elderly couple during the October snowstorm, Shana, a 160-pound German shepherd-timberwolf mix, continues to bask in the spotlight.
During the height of the surprise storm, Shana dug a tunnel under a massive tree that blocked the entrance to the Alden home of Eve and Norm Fertig and then led the couple safely to the door.
The dog was honored Nov. 30 with the Citizens for Humane Animal Treatment's Hero's Award for bravery. Since then, Shana has attracted national media attention.
CNN, Fox News, major TV network affiliates nationwide and newspapers have featured the Fertigs' heroic dog. Eve Fertig said she has talked to news outlets in California, South America and Hawaii.
"We haven't had a dog hero since Lassie and Rin Tin Tin," she said. "Right now the world is in such a mess; they needed this story, it was a shot in the arm."
Shana even receives mail and gift baskets.
"It's addressed to her; not Mrs. Fertig," she said. "It's just so heartwarming."
>Democratic Committee launches basic Web site
The Cheektowaga Democratic Committee has launched a Web site.
Chairman Frank Max said the site contains basic information but will be improved in the future.
"For now, we have a committee and officers directory, a news section, calendar and links to elected officials and selected government agencies," Max said. "In time, we are thinking of adding a blog, an elections section that will feature news of local and area races and other features. Eventually, we want to build an online community for our committee people to communicate and exchange ideas."
The site was designed by Vice Chairman Andrew Kulyk. The Web address is www.cheekdems.com.
