A former business manager at St. Christopher Catholic Church in the Town of Tonawanda is accused of embezzling funds from the church, diocese officials confirmed Sunday.
The criminal case against the woman, whose name has not been disclosed, is being led by the Erie County district attorney's office.
No one from the office could be reached to comment Sunday.
Kevin Keenan, spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, said a statement was read to parishioners during Masses on Sunday informing them about the incident.
Keenan offered a statement issued by the diocese and referred further questions to the district attorney's office.
It was unclear how much money the ex-business manager is accused of stealing from the church at 2660 Niagara Falls Blvd.
"Diocese and auditors confirmed the suspected embezzling during an audit," the diocese statement said. "Information regarding the audit was turned over to the Erie County district attorney's office for further investigation."
"We will continue to cooperate as the case progresses through the courts," the statement added. "The auditors have recommended certain changes in the internal controls that the parish is in the process of implementing."
Keenan said the woman was no longer employed by the parish as a result of the audit.
