Carl C. Hicks of Buffalo, a Postal Service retiree and Coast Guard veteran, died Saturday in Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 56.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Hicks was a 1968 graduate of East High School and served eight years in the Coast Guard, until 1978. He was based in San Francisco and also aboard a ship.
Mr. Hicks earned an associate degree in electronics from Bessemer (Ala.) Technical College.
He returned to Buffalo with his family in 1984 and went to work for the Postal Service, seeing service in the Main Post Office and several area branches as a mail handler. Mr. Hicks was promoted to a departmental supervisor, a post he held until he retired in 2003.
A professional photographer for more than 25 years, Mr. Hicks operated Priceless Images, processing DVDs, and photographing weddings and family functions.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, the former Lauretta Tolbert; two sons, Hakeem and Jamar; a daughter, Nikki; two brothers, Tafawa and Yeda "Kelvin"; and five sisters, Barbara Dixon, Denise Sutherland, Darlene Hicks-Brown, Evelyn Watkins and Patricia.
Services were held Thursday in Sword of the Spirit Ministries, 300 Kensington Ave.
