Face it, it's just not Christmas without an organ thundering some version of "Vom Himmel Hoch," the mighty German Christmas chorale. Likewise, it's just not a Festival of Lessons and Carols without "Adam Lay Ybounden" and "Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree.
"We'll get a fix of all these carols at 5 p.m. Sunday in Buffalo's Blessed Sacrament Church, when the virtuosic Blessed Sacrament Church Choir, led by Frank Scinta, presents its annual Festival of Lessons and Carols.
From King's College Cambridge on down, it's the Lessons and Carols custom to mix new and old, offbeat with traditional. Sunday's offerings include "Golden Mornings" and "Love Came Down at Christmas" as well as "Ding Dong, Merrily on High" and "I Sing of a Maiden." The congregation will get to join in, as is traditional, on carols such as "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" and "Adeste Fideles."
