>Firefighters amend pension program
An amended firefighters pension program for the Elma Fire Protection District was approved by voters Tuesday, 129-19.
The results were announced by Supervisor Michael Nolan during Wednesday's work session of the Town Board. The district includes Jamison Road, Blossom Road and Elma fire companies.
Under the plan, volunteers 65 and older will be allowed to continue earning credits beginning Jan. 1. The amendment also increases the maximum years of service credit, from 20 years to 40 years.
The cost of the program for 2006-07 will be $74,000 a year, including administrative costs of $5,000 per year. Currently the firefighters had to stop serving at age 65.
The amended program cost as of 2008 will be $140,000 a year, or $1,100 per participant.
Officials also noted Spring Brook Fire District approved the same measure and elected Charles Bethge to a five-year term as fire commissioner. A vote total was unavailable.
