Cheektowaga Central students can mark their calendars for March 20, 2008, because they know they will have off that day.
The School Board on Tuesday night adopted the student calendar for 2007-08. Superintendent Delia Bonenberger said Cheektowaga is following the calendar planned by the two area BOCES.
"For many years the region has worked on a regional calendar," she said. "It is an example of collaboration."
She said districts that do not follow the major vacations create issues because of the number of services being shared between and among districts and BOCES programs.
Because Easter is relatively early in 2008, schools will not be on vacation for a week near that holiday. The spring break is scheduled for April 14-18, well after Easter, which is March 23. But schools will be closed Good Friday and the day after Easter, and students will have an extra day off March 20, which is pegged as a staff development day.
The School Board also adopted the superintendent's recommended changes to this year's calendar because of the October snow storm.
"I'm recommending these changes to provide additional instruction for the students because no matter how you cut it, they missed six days," Bonenberger said.
Instead of a vacation day Dec. 22, school will be in session that day. Feb. 9, which was supposed to be a staff development day, will be a student attendance day. School also will be in session Feb. 22 and 23, the Thursday and Friday of mid-winter recess.
Students will get a new day off, providing there aren't too many more snow days, on May 25, the Friday before Memorial Day.
