>'Excused absences' set for make-up dates
The Iroquois Central School Board has come up with a solution for parents who booked vacations during the dates the district wants to use to make up for class time lost in the October snowstorm.
After hearing objections from parents, the board decided that requiring students to be in school on the make-up dates -- Feb. 21, 22 and 23 -- would cause extreme financial penalties on families that already had made vacation plans prior to the storm.
The board will allow for "excused absences" for those families. The new policy will apply only to those students and teachers who have documented vacation plans made prior to the Oct. 12-13 storm. All others will be required to attend classes Feb. 21-23.
The board had amended the school calendar in November to make up for snow days taken in October and insure that the district achieves the minimum number of instructional days mandated by the state.
