Niagara Honor Roll / Achievers and achievements

*Niagara University has been named to the first President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for distinguished community service. Niagara was among 141 colleges and universities nationwide selected for the honor, in recognition of extraordinary volunteer efforts to serve area neighborhoods or for their efforts to assist Gulf Coast communities devasted by Hurricane Katrina. Only 141 of 500 schools named were selected.

Last year, approximately 2,100 Niagara University students performed 60,000 hours of community service in schools and other settings.

The purpose of the honor roll is to increase greater levels of service and civic engagement by college students and increase the number of college students participating in volunteer service.

The Community Service Honor Roll is co-sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, USA Freedom Corps and the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

*The Wilson Lions Club has collected from the community more than 7,500 pairs of eyeglasses that will be sorted according to prescription and cleaned before being distributed to those in need.
