John S. Ward, of Alden, a Navy veteran and distinguished Mason, died Wednesday in Hospice of Buffalo. He was 85.
Born in Toronto, he moved to Western New York as a teenager. He attended Bennett High School and graduated from Alden Central High.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a fireman 1st class and saw action in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer USS Gwin. He worked as an assembler at Bennett Manufacturing in Alden, Twin Coach in Cheektowaga, and as an Alden Central School District custodian, a job from which he retired in 1984.
Mr. Ward was a member of Alden Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and trustee. He was a member of the Akron Masonic Lodge, master of the former Alden Masonic Lodge 320, and a member of the Buffalo Consistory and the Amherst Chapter Order of Eastern Star, and had received a Masonic Distinguished Service Award. He had been a member of the Alden Fire Department since 1964.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Ruth D.; a daughter, Judith; and a son, David R.
A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in Alden Presbyterian Church, 13298 Broadway, Alden. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 Saturday in the church.
