George A. Wendel, a lifelong resident of Lancaster, died Monday in Buffalo General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 70.
Mr. Wendel graduated from St. Mary's High School, earned an associate degree from Simmons School of Mortuary Science in Syracuse and worked at Wendel & Loecher Funeral Home in Lancaster as an associate from 1957 to 1971. He retired in 1995 as a sales manager for the Buffalo office of John Hancock Financial Services.
For several years, Mr. Wendel shared his talent of woodworking and crafts with youngsters through the summer playground program at the Lancaster Recreational Center.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, the former Marlene A. McDonald; seven daughters, Barbara Brindus, Dianne Andriolo, Laurie Kostszycki, Carol Vozdik, Kristine Rushok, Jennifer Hill and Linda Peters; two sons, David and Kenneth; a sister, Sue Bush; and two brothers, Joseph and James.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 1 St. Mary's Hill, Lancaster.
