Florine Muhammad, teacher, seamstress May 3, 1923 -- March 29, 2006

Florine Muhammad, a Buffalo native and retired elementary school teacher, died unexpectedly Wednesday in Grace Manor Nursing Home. She was 82.

Born Florine Gadley, she graduated from Girls Vocational High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Medaille College.

From 1974 until retiring in 1985, she taught in several Buffalo elementary schools.

Mrs. Muhammad had lived in the former housing development Talbert Mall and was on the tenant council. That development was later renamed Frederick Douglass Towers.

She also enjoyed cooking and was a seamstress.

Her husband of 42 years, Albert, died in 1991.

Survivors include four daughters, Shirley A., Susan Saffore, Marian Saffore and Cynthia Land, and two sisters, Irene Prince and Charlotte Gadley, all of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at noon Monday in T.J. Edwards Funeral Home, 995 Genesee St. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
