Two people distributing the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle newspaper were killed at 5 a.m. Thursday when their van crashed and caught fire.
Belvidere state troopers said Allegany County Coroner Ted Crowell of Wellsville pronounced Wanita Schwartz, 60, the driver, and Roger Cassano, 70, both of Dansville, dead at the scene. Crowell ordered autopsies on both.
Andover fire and ambulance crews responded to the accident, east of Elm Valley and about four miles west of Andover.
Troopers said Schwartz and Cassano were distributing the newspaper in the area and the van was eastbound when it veered across the road and slammed into a tree.
The crash remains under investigation, with no cause yet determined.
Troopers called the Bureau of Criminal Investigation to the accident scene as firefighters battled the blaze that destroyed the vehicle.
Route 417 traffic was diverted for several hours so emergency crews could clear the scene.
