Robert F. Young, a World II Navy veteran who worked for Iron Workers Local 9 in Niagara Falls, died Wednesday in his Sanborn home under the care of Niagara Hospice. He was 79.
Mr. Young was born in Niagara Falls, where he attended school.
He married Jacquelyn Schimmelman in 1972.
During World War II, he served aboard the USS Langley and USS Tripoli. He enlisted again during the Korean War and served aboard the giant aircraft carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Mediterranean Sea.
In 1961, Mr. Young joined the Iron Workers Union and worked on many construction projects. He retired in 1988.
He served as commander of Sanborn Post, American Legion, in 1976.
Mr. Young enjoyed farming, gardening and restoring John Deere tractors.
In addition to his wife of 33 years, survivors include a son, Robert A. of Niagara Falls; four daughters, Gwen King of Sanborn, Marie Walke of Dewey Beach, Del.; Doreen Cafarella of Niagara Falls and Becky Lenzie of Chicago; a brother, William of Niagara Falls; five sisters, Mary D'Anna and Phyllis Bechtel, both of Niagara Falls, Betty Metzler and Pat Walker, both of Olcott, and Ruth Gerrard of Angleton, Texas; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rhoney Funeral Home, 5893 Hoover Road.
