New Assessor Karen Bowker was sworn in Monday before the Town Board.
Bowker took the oath of office from Town Justice John A. Kohler. She follows Frank Boniface who served the town for 10 years.
Bowker began her official duties March 20 and has had plenty to keep her busy.
She said Monday that 300 informal grievance hearings were completed by Thursday and additional hearings will be held for out-of-state property owners. Hundreds of taxpayers filed complaints when the town did an revaluation of property this year. The results brought many parcels and home lots to an estimated 100 percent of their resale value.
Taxpayers have been objecting to the increase and have been attending hearings for the past few weeks. Bowker said disclosure notices will be mailed the first week in May providing the decision on the hearing. Property owners will then have the option of formal proceedings to try to change the value placed on their land.
