>$8.67 million bond issue to be on May 16 ballot

LOCKPORT -- A bond issue to help finance $8.67 million in renovations to 13 Lockport School District buildings will be on the ballot May 16 .

Assistant Superintendent for Finance Gerald J. Stuitje said the projects -- which include roofing, heating, plumbing, electrical and masonry work -- would begin in about a year, with completion in two or three years.

The project would not increase taxes, Stuitje said. Start-up work would be financed from $1.45 million the district has saved over the past couple of years in debt service and capital reserve funds. The rest would come from a bond issue totaling $7 million. The state would reimburse 80 percent of the total project costs, Stuitje said.

The bond vote will coincide with School Board elections and the 2006-07 budget vote. The board voted unanimously last week to hold the referendum.

Stuitje said the upgrades target 11 schools, the administration building and maintenance garage buildings.
