Josephine Garey, a resident of Garden Gate Health Care Facility, Cheektowaga, for seven years, died there Saturday, 11 days shy of her 100th birthday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Amelia Catholic Church, 2999 Eggert Road, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
Born Josephine Schwab in Buffalo, she attended St. Francis de Salles School through the eighth grade.
She married Allen Garey on Sept. 19, 1931. He died in 1972.
Mrs. Garey was a homemaker until age 53, when she began work as a sales clerk at L.L. Berger department store on Main Street downtown. She retired when the store permanently closed its doors in 1992.
Mrs. Garey remained active by walking and playing cards and bingo until she moved into Garden Gate at age 92.
She had been an active member of St. Joseph University Catholic Church in Buffalo's University Heights neighborhood for more than 50 years. She also was a member of the Mothers Club at St. Joseph's Elementary School, Holy Angels Academy and D'Youville College.
Mrs. Garey was a Catholic Charities worker and served as chairwoman of the Women's Division for St. Joseph Church in the 1950s and 1960s. Later, she was a special minister of Communion at both St. Joseph and at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. In addition, she was a special minister of Communion to the sick at Timon Towers
Senior Apartments on Delaware Avenue, where she also resided for several years.
Survivors include a daughter, Regina Burke of Amherst; a sister, Mary S. Murphy of Amherst; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
