Services were held Saturday in First Centennial Baptist Church for Lillie Walker Spearman, who was instrumental in the founding of several Baptist churches in Buffalo. Burial was in Forest Lawn.
She died Monday in Erie County Medical Center after a long illness. She was 91.
Born Lillie Robinson in Clinton, N.C., she married Sidney J. Spearman in 1934. He died in 1992.
She was known as "Big Ma" and "Momma Spearman." She and her husband were instrumental in the founding of several of Buffalo's leading Baptist churches. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Gladys Nolan, and a son, James O., both of Buffalo; two sisters, Sarah Frances DeVane of Ivanhoe, N.C., and Lula Williams of Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
