Irish pulls rank with Griffs

The Canisius women's lacrosse team played its first game against a nationally ranked opponent in school history Saturday. No. 10 Notre Dame (8-1) lived up to its ranking in handing the Griffs an 18-2 loss at the Demske Sports Complex.

Whitney Card and Erica Nasca each had a goal and an assist for the Griffs (5-4). Rasheeda Brenton led Canisius with four ground balls, while Cara Foligno caused a team-high three turnovers.

Courtney Gibbons had a hat trick as St. Bonaventure remained unbeaten with a 12-9 win at Brown. The Bonnies (5-0) are one of seven Division I teams still undefeated.

BASEBALL: Visiting St. Bonaventure beat Duquesne, 4-1, for its first Atlantic 10 win of season. Sophomore pitcher Cody Vincent struck out 10 and allowed one unearned run on six hits in nine innings. . . . Niagara (9-10, 2-0) began its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference season with 6-3 and 8-0 victories at Iona to extend its overall winning streak to five games. Mike Radanovic and Josh Sawatzky each went the distance for the wins. . . . Central Michigan pitched back-to-back shutouts to beat UB, 5-0 and 8-0, to spoil the Bulls' home opener. UB (4-16) mustered just four hits on the day. . . . Tom Hausler (Williamsville East) made his pitching debut for Fredonia a memorable one as he threw a five-hit shutout for a 2-0 victory over Lawrence at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Blue Devils (1-5) lost the opener, 12-4.

MEN'S LACROSSE: Saint Joseph's scored the first six goals and beat Canisius, 11-4, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Kevin Ross led the Griffs (2-5, 1-1) with two goals while Dan McAuliffe and Doug Friedman also netted goals. Tom Kucharczak (Hamburg) made his second straight start and had 11 saves in the loss, falling to 2-2.

SOFTBALL: St. Bonaventure opened Atlantic 10 play by dropping a pair of games to Charlotte, 6-0 and 2-0. The Bonnies (5-10, 0-2) outhit the 49ers, 6-4, in the nightcap, but stranded eight runners. . . . Niagara (12-6) won its fifth and sixth consecutive games when it improved to 4-0 at the UMBC Classic. The Purple Eagles beat Brown, 7-1, and then knocked off UMBC, 4-2. . . . UB was shut out, 13-0, by California and 4-0 by East Carolina at the East Carolina State Farm Pirate Classic.

MEN'S TENNIS: Niagara lost its MAAC opener, falling to Fairfield, 4-3, at the Sportsplex in North Tonawanda. Walter Garcia and Alex Abji improved to 3-0 at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 win. Niagara took a 2-1 lead when Garcia and Abji won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Garcia won his ninth-straight match while Abji notched his fifth. . . . Mike Rockman and Fred Duncan won their singles matches for UB in a 5-2 loss to Manhattan.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Niagara (5-9) remained undefeated in the MAAC (3-0) with a 6-1 victory over Fairfield at the Sportsplex in North Tonawanda. . . . UB won two doubles matches in a 5-2 loss at Bowling Green.
