Rita Eberl, headed Eberl Iron Works board Oct. 9, 1913 -- March 22, 2006

Rita O. Eberl, former chairwoman of the board of Eberl Iron Works and a donor to both Canisius College and Nardin Academy, died Wednesday in her Town of Tonawanda home after a brief illness. She was 92.

The alumni call center at Canisius College is named for Mrs. Eberl and her husband, Frank J., who died in 1983.

Their sons, Canisius graduates Frank L. and George J., both of Buffalo, are co-owners of the family business founded in 1923 by their father and his brother, George.

Born Rita Schneggenburger in Buffalo, she attended St. Mary's Business School.

From 1928 to 1940, Mrs. Eberl worked as a stenographer for General Motors Acceptance Corp.

For 50 years, she sang in church choirs, first at St. Mary's and later at St. Lawrence.

In addition to her sons, she is survived by a daughter, Ruth M. of Buffalo; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:15 a.m. Saturday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
