A Boy Scout leader in Orchard Park has been arrested in the rape of a girl two years ago.
Daniel J. McCarthy, 38, leader of Troop 518, has been charged with second-degree rape, second-degree criminal sexual acts, third-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a minor.
McCarthy, of Southwestern Boulevard in Orchard Park, was arrested Monday and arraigned in Orchard Park Town Court.
After an investigation by Detective Joe Wehrfritz and Officer Jeff Heeb of the Orchard Park Police, McCarthy was charged with having sexual relations over a period of time with an Orchard Park girl who was 14 at the time.
McCarthy's troop was headquartered out of the Orchard Park United Methodist Church on North Buffalo Street.
Merrill Porter, the coordinator between the troop and the church, said he would inform the local scouting authorities about the charges as soon as he gets more information.
"I'm going to talk to headquarters. Then he has to be removed," Porter said. "After all, he's working with kids all the time."
Porter said he found out Wednesday that McCarthy faces charges; he hadn't been told what the charges were when he was contacted by a reporter.
"I can't say anything more. I don't know a lot about it," Porter said.
Porter said McCarthy had been a leader with Troop 518 for five or six years. McCarthy was released Tuesday on $5,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court Tuesday.
